STRATEGY #2B - Creating accessible and inclusive education to career pathways (Post-Secondary Institutions)

LONG-TERM OUTCOME

Philadelphia K-12 schools, post-secondary institutions, and local employers work together to formalize diverse pathways that recruit, immerse and inspire Philadelphia students, including those who identify as Black, Latine or as women/girls, to enter STEM fields.

SHORT-TERM OUTCOMES

  • Regional post-secondary institutions consider a wide range of skills and experiences for entry  into STEM programs of study.

  • All Philadelphia students, including those who identify as Black, Latine or as women/girls, have increased opportunities for remediation and preparation to enter and excel in post-secondary STEM programs.

  • Regional post-secondary degree and non-degree STEM programs have access to resources that allow them to provide real-world and career-transferable experiences that facilitate entry into STEM careers.

  • Regional post-secondary degree and non-degree STEM programs and STEM employers collaborate to develop real-world and career-transferable experiences that align to STEM careers.

MEDIUM-TERM OUTCOMES
  • Regional post-secondary institutions accept a wide range of skills and experiences into STEM program admissions decisions.

  • Utilization and successful completion of remediation and preparation increases among Philadelphia students who 1) are in need of remediation and/or 2) are interested in post-secondary STEM programs.

  • Regional post-secondary degree and non-degree STEM programs provide real-world and career-transferable experiences that facilitate entry to STEM careers

  • More Philadelphia high school graduates, including those who identify as Black, Latine, or as women/girls, major and graduate in STEM fields.

PULSE Ambassadors

The Post-Secondary Workgroup is proud to collaborate with the Partnership for Undergraduate Life Science Education (PULSE) to offer the PSEC-PULSE Ambassadors Training Program (ATP). The ATP is a three-day professional development workshop that will train Philadelphia-based faculty and non-profit staff with skills in facilitative leadership, shared visioning, organizational change, and evidence-based educational practices. Participants will generate collaborative action plans to specifically address one of the outcomes of PSEC’s Theory of Change which states “post-secondary degree and non-degree STEM programs provide real-world and career-transferrable experiences that facilitate entry to STEM careers.”

The ATP will bring together 20-25 participants from Philadelphia colleges, universities, and nonprofits to build capacity for lasting change in STEM education.

Summer  STEM Bridge Program

The workgroup developed and piloted a Summer STEM Bridge Program for Philadelphia high school graduates entering STEM college programs.  In conjunction with the Wistar Institute and  Heights Philadelphia, this program aimed to facilitate a seamless shift from high school to college, offering participants a glimpse into the college experience before the fall semester begins.
